After a delayed start to the season, Aberdeen Wanderers 2nd XV’s first league match of the 2014/2015 season was an away game to the newly formed Fraserburgh RFC. This being the second time the two clubs had met after a friendly “development” game the week before which the Wands won convincingly.

It was a tense start but after a fantastic display of grit, endurance and sheer determination Captain James Crothers - against all odds - won the Coin toss and decided to kick (tails never fails). Wanderer’s, continuing upon the success of last week charged down the ball and turned it over from where they dominated the game with try’s from:

As the try’s kept coming for Wanderers – concentration lapsed and while the Wand’s were still scoring - the quality of the rugby diminished (something which should be taken into account in future matches). Fraserburgh eventually seized upon this with a convincing try from a Wanderer’s mistake in their own half. Fraserburgh, showed that when they were behind, they didnt put their heads down and were eager to punish the Wand’s overconfidence.

In such a high scoring game there were a number of highlights - Carl Elliot and Callum Macdonald’s return to rugby, Jean-Baptist’s outstanding debut for the Wanderer’s (cemented with two trys), Mitchell Scott’s (who was named Man of the Match) 4 try’s and 6 conversions and the kindness shown to Fraserburgh by Simon Fox who decided to miss the majority of his conversions so as to keep hope alive. The Wanderers will however have to take the lessons from this match – keep concentrated, keep playing regardless of the score – into their following matches which will not be quite as one-sided.

At the final whistle the score was Wanderers 91 – Fraserburgh 5. An ideal start for the 2’s, one which hopefully continues into the long season ahead.
