High scoring Wanderers 48-36 win in the Cup against the Police

Full Time: North Police Scotland 36 – Aberdeen Wanderers 48

Wanderers progressed through to the Caledonia North Bowl Semi Final after a tough, high-scoring encounter with the North Police Scotland team at Balgownie.

The police were first to score with a missed conversion to make it 5-0. Wanderers quickly replied with a try from Leo Peerless. The conversion was missed, and the score was 5-5 after 12 minutes. Wanderers added two additional tries through Dylan Lennox and Joe Nealon with a Malachi Svenson Conversion before half time. The Polce also scored two tries with one converted to make the half time score 17-17.

Shortly into the second half the Police were down to 14 men for a yellow card offence however they scored a try but missed the conversion to make it 22-17.

With the man advantage and some real pressure Wanderers took hold of the game by scoring 3 tries quickly on the wings. First was Lewis McLean down the left wing, then forward Stuart O’Brien on right wing followed by a chase by Malachi Svensen also for a try on the right wing. Regan Lofthouse hit one conversion out of the three to make it 34-22.

The Police didn’t give up and once back to 15 they scored another converted try to make it 34-29. Good play through the Wanderers backline led to Regan Lofthouse powering in for a try which he converted himself to take the score to 41-29. Despite only 5 minutes to go the Police came back again to score a converted try to take it to 41-36.

Wanderers finally secured the win in the final minute with a second try from Leo Peerless in the corner. From a tight angle Regan Lofthouse slotted over a brilliant conversion to make it 48-36 on the final whistle.

Post match Head Coach Ewan Smeaton commented.

“I’m really happy with the result today. The lads dug deep to get the result after conceding to trail at 50 minutes. It was also great that four of our tries were scored by our wingers. We knew that the Police would ask questions up front and our forwards worked hard so we could then get the ball wide when we could.

Malachi Svensen was our man on the match at scrum half for great disruption and an excellent individual try.

Other stand out performances were Stuart O’Brien in the front row and Leo Peerless with two tries today. He now has six tries in five games this season.

The team is looking forward to the challenge in the Semi Final.”
