Our second pre-season friendly took place at Mackie against a grey drizzle background.
A tougher match compared to Ellon was expected and proved true to form. A well disciplined Mackie team scored 6 tries and conversion in the first 30 mins of play. Matthew scored his try at 15 mins, with Nathan converting.
Nathan scored our 2nd try early in the 3rd quarter but missed the conversion. Alex went over the line 10 mins later. An uncoverted Mackie try and an earlier penalty kick meant Wanderers won this passage of play.
The final 15 mins of play saw a further 4 Mackie tries, each missing the conversion.
Last week U14s scored 12 tries against Ellon and I advised our players that they need to be ready to play when the boot is on the other foot. Sunday saw that happen with 11 tries against us. However, they did very well to keep on playing to the end and Mackie's coach acknowledged it was a tougher game than the scoreline suggested. A good learning experience for us as we go into our final friendly next Sunday.
Youen was my 'player of the match' for making some excellent tackles so early in his rugby experience, not to mention the excellent defensive kick in the 2nd half.
