Granite City U15s beat Ellon U15s 38-31

The first home league game of the season saw Ellon come to Groats Road, both teams were keen to start the season with a win but Granite City came out 38-31 victors.

The early play was fierce with plenty of hard running from either side but Ellon were first to score after 5 minutes when their runner broke through some tackles to score. The response from Granite City was good with plenty of pressure being applied to Ellon, the pressure paid off after 12 minutes when Jack Marlow dived over the line from short range. From an attacking 5 metre scrum the ball went to Finlay Wharry who was tackled just short of the line before Andrew Nespolo dived over the line to extend the lead, the lead was extended further when the ball went out wide to Sebastian Aitken who outpaced the defence to score. A late try by Ellon closed the gap to make the half time score 19-12.

We started the second half strong with the ball being popped up to Jack Williams who powered over the line to extend our lead, Ellon struck back with a try of their own before Leo Peerless got on the end of a flowing move to score under the posts. Three minutes later Finlay Smeaton ran into dummy half and spotted a gap to score what proved to be the decisive score, Ellon scored a further 2 tries but we held on for a deserved 38-31 victory.

The forwards really stood up this week with everyone putting in a big shift which was great to see, man of the match goes to Dom Van Zelm who made a real impact with some strong runs and overall work rate throughout the game.
