Wanderers youngsters get to witness famous Scottish Victory

Saturday 24th Feb saw a bus leave The Jason White Pavilion at midday with 6 x coaches and a cross section of kids from P4 through to U14 travelling South to Edinburgh to watch the Scotland v England Calcutta Cup match.
Following on from Scotland’s heavy defeat to Wales in the 6 Nations opener and their less than convincing win over France, there was perhaps a feeling of trepidation amongst most on the bus, although in true all-inclusive Wanderers fashion there was a few Englishmen welcomed on board who were no doubt travelling with more confidence.
However on arrival in the stadium if was clear this was not to be another average Scottish Performance.
From the rousing pre match rendition of Flower of Scotland being belted out, the atmosphere inside the stadium was electric and helped spurn on a truly amazing first half Scottish Performance.
Sitting in the South Stand 2 or 3 rows back from the edge of the pitch and right behind the posts, Wanderers were well positioned to watch Huw Jones and Sean Maitland cross for their tries in the first half, helping the Scot’s to go in at half time 22 v 6 up.
The second half was all about the Scottish defence, they had obviously been through the Wanderers tackling drill of: (Foot in the Hoop / Band of Steel / Cheek to Cheek / Drive) as not a single tackle was missed and the Scottish defence only leaked 1 x early try.
Full time score Scotland 25 – 13 England, and Murrayfield went crazy!
The Wanderers players crowded to the front of the stand to applaud their hero’s as they made a lap of honour round the stadium, showing off the Calcutta Cup as they went.
Wanderers celebrations involved much dodgy dancing to the tunes belted out from the Murrayfield PA system as a large proportion of the crowd stayed behind after the final whistle to savour the atmosphere.
It was then the long walk back to the bus and back North, with a nourishment stop in Burger King on route, sneaking suspicion this may have been the highlight of the whole trip for some.
Bus arrived back late into Aberdeen to deliver tired yet happy players back to their families.
All of the Wanderers players in attendance were too young to remember the last time Scotland beat England (10 years ago) so they can be forgiven if the significance of the result was perhaps lost on them. However they got to watch an amazing match and be part of an equally amazing atmosphere which will hopefully spur on their passion for Rugby.
All players are to be praised for the behaviour on the trip, they mixed well across the age groups and gave a very good representation of the club.
Thanks to all coaches on the day who assisted, especially those from South of the border who might not have enjoyed the result quite as much.
