After working hard all season, their final league game saw Aberdeen Wanderers RFC 1st XV take on Garioch RFC for second place in the BT Caledonia League Division Two North. After months of intense training, the players headed on to their home pitch at Groats Road knowing they had a tough 80 minutes ahead.
Wanderers took an early lead, with a try scored by Mike Smith, however Garioch soon caught up making the score 5 all. After many exciting plays, Scott Rowell scored another try for Wanderers, and after converting his own score he took Wanderers ahead at half time, leading 12 points to 5. At this stage it looked like anybody’s game, but a try by Lewis Henderson from a rolling maul put victory in sight of the Wanderers, bringing the score up to 17 points to 5. As Wanderers pressed on for a fourth try in order to achieve a bonus point, Garioch managed to steal back the ball in the final play, scoring the concluding try for the game and making the final score 17-10 at full time.
This victory secured Aberdeen Wanderers second place in the BT Caledonia League Division Two North, and now the players can enjoy a well-deserved rest after their final game of this season. Wanderers’ Man of the Match was awarded to Carwyn Walker for his intense work rate.
