This afternoon Aberdeen Wanderers RFC travelled to Woodend, Banchory to play Deeside RFC for their first preseason game. The boys have not always been successful against Deeside, who have recently been promoted to Caley 1 League, so they knew they had to put in a good effort. Carwyn Walker took on captain duties and lead the boys out onto the pitch with their heads held high.

The attack demonstrated by Wanderers throughout the game was fantastic. Play after play, the showed off their skills in all areas of the game. Particularly in the ruck, scrum and lineout. They won many off the opposition’s scrums and lineouts, proving all that preseason training was worth it in the end! They were first to put points on the board, with an incredible try from Sam Lobban. Ross Dugan easily picked up the extra points, and Wanderers take the lead 0-7.

Deeside begin the second quarter with a high tackle, giving Wanderers another opportunity as they kick the ball to touch. This was quickly followed by a try from Arif Muhammad, bringing the score up to 0-12. Deeside then managed to get the ball into Wanderers’ half. This is where the boys demonstrated their excellent defence skills. Ruck after ruck after ruck, they held Deeside back and did not let them cross the line. All of this defence work was followed by another try from Tom Welding, and a conversion brought the score up to 0-19 as the third quarter drove to a close.

After a strong attack in the last quarter, the ball was passed to Andrew Fischer who took it across the line. However, this try was denied due to a forward pass. The final quarter saw one last try from Mitchell Scott, allowing Wanderers to finish the game with a lead of 24 points to 0. Well done boys!

The next preseason game is next Saturday (20th August) where Aberdeen Wanderers will travel to Forfar to play Strathmore.
