The U18s started off the league campaign with a great win versus Ross Sutherland.

The U18s started off the league campaign with a great win versus Ross Sutherland. The boys were focused from the start and pleased the coaches by applying what we had worked on in training. The wind caused some difficulty with the line outs, but it was a simple ball from the first home line out that resulted in the opening try. Man of the match Angus Clark broke free to score the first of his three tries. George Colleran was unable to convert but rectified it with three successful kicks later on before handing duties to Jack Greening (2) and Roddy Shenstone (1).

The boys were always on top and supported each other well. A few of the tries were scored by supporting players after surging runs from others. By focussing on the basics of clearing the rucks, driving the mauls and tackling they were rewarded with plenty of possession. This was used wisely with the backs stretching RS and gaining plenty of ground. There were tries for Damien Gennochio, Arif Mohammed, Jack and Angus before Ross Sutherland scored. It was a deserved score and a reminder that scores have to be earned. Roddy finished off the half with a try following a typical weaving, solo run. As ever, there was support available from Grant Keil if needed. Half time 34-5.

With a full set of substitutes available there were wholesale changes at half time to make sure everyone had at least a half. It was great to see players eager to get back on. Arif scored very early and many thought it would open the flood gates. However RS were no push overs and in the next half hour only Frank Selbie crossed the line to score. Duncan Mullins, Angus and Damien finished off the match with a try apiece. Final score 67-5.

It was a terrific performance and well done to the boys who are playing at this level for the first time. Everyone had a part to play and they played it well. The new scrum laws will result in more competition in the front row than previously. This was evident with a few steals in the scrum from some great hooking combined with strong drives.

Thankfully there were no injuries to report, though there was some concern when Arif came off for treatment. But all was well as Rich described it as only being an "injured boot". Hmmm?

Finally thank you to a few people. Innes White and Liam Cronin stepped in to run touch. They required as much running and concentration as anyone on the field. Also a huge thank you to Aberdeenshire for the use of the Woodside pitch, and to Ashley Wiles in particular for being there to help set up and clean up. It was appreciated. Some of the team are Shire players but the help was much appreciated.
