Late try gives Colts victory
Granite City Colts came out deserving 12-11 winners against the previously unbeaten Mackie team with the rain dictating that open attacking play would be difficult.
The normal pattern of letting the opposition score an early try continued with some soft tackling allowing Mackie to score a try after only 2 minutes, but thankfully the Colts managed to hit back 5 minutes later with the ball going out wide to Leo Peerless who outpaced the defence to score under the posts. The next Colts try wasn't long in coming with Jack Marlow managing to finish off a nice passing move to score out wide to give the Colts the lead, this was a lead the Colts held until the 28th minute when Mackie scored but decisively missing the conversion to give the Colts a half time lead of 8-7.
The 2nd half was a scrappy affair with the Colts making numerous handling errors and on many occasions aimlessly throwing the ball away in contact, unfortunately one of these errors gave Mackie possession allowing them to score a dubious try out wide!! The Colts were increasingly spending more time in the Mackie half with only handling errors stopping us scoring, but this all changed with 2 minutes to go when Finlay Smeaton put in a grubber kick which Leo Peerless picked up to score out wide meaning the scores were tied at 11-11. This left Ben McGregor with a kick out wide to win the game, the drama increased after Mackie charged early and shouted meaning the kick had to be retaken but Ben managed to slot over the conversion to win the game for the Colts.
Great effort from all the boys today, defensively the line speed was amazing all game and probably proved to be the decisive factor.
