Granite City Colts tasted defeat for the first time this season at the hands of Deeside/Garioch in what was a fiercely contested match. Unfortunately the Colts were only able to field 13 players due to multiple players being unavailable this week, this resulted in us only having 4 forwards available for the match meaning some of the backs got to enjoy packing down in the scrum.
The Colts again started slowly as in previous weeks allowing Deeside/Garioch to score 2 tries in the first 10 minutes before gradually managing to get some possession and get on the scoreboard, the lack of forward power was visible at the breakdown as we were struggling to secure possession meaning the backs were struggling to get into the game. Nevertheless the first period was tight with Deeside/Garioch leading 12-11.
The 2nd period started well for the Colts with Finlay Smeaton scoring his 3rd try of the day to give the Colts the lead for the first time, unfortunately the lead only lasted 2 minutes before we allowed Deeside/Garioch to score with their small wingers causing us a lot of trouble. Jack Marlow scored before Deeside/Garioch scored 2 tries to extend their lead, the 3rd period was tight with a late score from Deeside/Garioch securing a 32-21 victory for them.
It was a frustrating day for the Colts with us relying on individuals to make the breaks rather than building phases, the backs never really managed to get into the game with the lack of forward power being a deciding factor in the result but credit to Deeside/Garioch who played well and looked threatening throughout.
