The first round of league games, some friendlies and a couple of parties made it a very busy weekend at Aberdeen Wanderers RFC

The weekend for Aberdeen Wanderers started on Saturday morning where the micros and minis trained at Groats Road. The weather was great and we saw over 120 young players getting involved in the sport. Meanwhile over at Countesswells Playing fields, our Under 15s team played a friendly against Robert Gordon College’s S3A team. The boys played well, considering it was their first run out this season and although no score was kept, as it was a development game, a well drilled RGC team managed to get more tries over the line.

Back at Groats Road our Youth Section’s 25th Anniversary celebrations kicked off with a party for all our youth players where there was a BBQ, bouncy castles and large cake. Pictures of the celebrations can be viewed here

Rugby Games
At 1:00pm our Under 18s kicked off in their first league game of the season against Mackie. Aberdeen Wanderers youth teams are combined with Deeside RFC in the Youth Club Red Conference League again this season and we saw a strong combined team play a great 70 minutes of rugby at Groats Road. The final score in this game was the combined Aberdeen Wanderers and Deeside team winning 29 points 5.
The game was then followed by our Warriors team (the 2nd XV) playing a friendly against Peterhead. The final score in this game was Warriors 24 and Peterhead 5, which saw some great rugby.

1st XV
Meanwhile in Stonehaven our 1st XV played Mackie RFC in our first league game in Caledonia League Division One. Wanderers took a 19 men squad to the Redcloak pitches, in what was always going to be an exciting fast paced game, however no-one expected the game to be as close as it was, which ended in an Aberdeen Wanderers win (34 points to 29) in the last few moments of the game from an interception try.

Dinner and Dance
After a great day of rugby on the field, the Youth Section’s 25th Anniversary celebrations continued with a formal Dinner and Dance in the evening with our guest of honour, Jason White. Jason, a former Aberdeen Wanderers player as well as being a British Lion and Scotland captain with 77 caps for his country, attended the event and gave an insight of his career and playing for Scotland as well as participating in a Q&A session. Sunday started with girls training at Groats Road at 10:00am and then the Under 13s team played Mackie in their first league game of the season at 11:00am. This was the first competitive game for a lot of the boys on a full size pitch and every player put in a big shift. The final score in this game was the combined Aberdeen Wanderers and Deeside team winning 24 points 3.

Then at 1:00pm the Under 16s kicked off against Mackie, in their first league game, but lost 24 points to 43, which was great considering we started with 13 players.

In other combined Aberdeen Wanderers and Deeside games, the Under 14s lost to Mackie, 7 points to 17 and the Under 15s lost 14 points to 28, again to Mackie. Both of these games were held at Woodend pitches, Banchory.

Match reports for the games will be made available in the Match Centre for each team.
