The 2017/18 season fixtures for the senior and youth teams are now available on the club website

I can say we are more prepared physically and tactically then ever before
- Jake Watt, 1st XV captain

In preparation for the coming season the fixtures for the senior and youth teams (Under 13 and up) have been published on our club website and added to the club’s online calendar.

BT Caledonia League Division 1

Our 1st XV team kick off the competitive games on Saturday 26th August with a home game against Caithness RFC. That weekend is the start of BT Caledonia League Division 1 where nine teams battle it out for promotion into the national leagues. Newcomers to the league this season are Banff and Grangemouth RFC, who join last year’s team of Aberdeen Wanderers, Alloa, Caithness, Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Harris Academy FP’s and Strathmore.

Jake Watt, 1st XV captain at Aberdeen Wanderers has commented"Its been a hard and challenging preseason which has really built the excitement of the upcoming season within the squad.

Thanks to the coaches, I can say we are more prepared physically and tactically then ever before. Large effort has been put into thinking clearly under pressure which in particular will bolster our attack, a weakness of our game last season. I'm personally looking forward to seeing it in fruition!"

If you are free on 26th August, why not pop along to Groats Road and support our boys. The game will kick off at 3:00pm.

BT Caledonia League Division 3 North

Also on Saturday 26th August our development team, known locally as the Warriors, start their league campaign against North Police Scotland RFC in BT Caledonia League Division 3 North. This year, Division 3 North is a twelve team league and our development team hope to make a mark in this league. Joining Wanderers and the Police in this league are Aberdeen University, Peterhead, Moray 2nd XV, Kinloss Eagles, Inverness Craig Dunain, Huntly. Gordonians 2nd XV, Dyce, Aberdeenshire 2nd XV and Fraserburgh.

Development squad Captain, Calum Watson said "Anticipation is building ahead of the new season; it’s been a tough but very rewarding preseason with the squad making big strides. Boasting a young and exciting squad, welcoming a number of new boys and club youth players, leading them into the upcoming campaign is a very proud moment. We are all pushing to take this young squad to the next level and putting our hands up for 1XV selection.

Looking ahead we are aware of the challenges that await us with returning faces of Moray, Aberdeenshire and Kinloss making it a hugely competitive league. We caused a lot of problems for teams last season and aim to build on that and improve our consistency. I am immensely excited to see what the squad can do this season and our brand of rugby is exciting and difficult to deal with."

Granite City Rugby

Following on from last season’s Caledonia Youth Cup, Aberdeen Wanderers Youth teams will be working with Aberdeen Grammar’s youth players under the banner of Granite City Rugby to strength youth rugby in the city. The five youth teams, Under 13, Under 14, Under 15, Under 16 and Under 18 will take part in the Club Youth - Lancer Conference which sees the teams play against Dundee Rugby, Ellon, Gordonstoun School, Mackie and Perthshire twice before Christmas.

Adam Cochran, Under 18s team manager said "Following the formation of Granite City Rugby for the Caledonia Cup last season we are entering a new campaign and the U18 coaches are looking forward to working with the group of current and new players and the challenge of forming a team capable of challenging the league before Christmas and the Caledonia Cup after New Year. We have a strong core of players from last season who are still playing U18 rugby this season and some exciting players who are moving up from U16. There is some great potential within this group of players. There will be some familiar opposition, and new opposition in the form of Dundee Rugby, who we look forward to welcoming to Groats Road and visiting in Dundee. All in all we are looking forward to an exciting and hopefully successful season ahead."

The conference games kick off on the weekend of 2nd September when the Granite City teams play Ellon RFC. However a few pre-season friendlies have been arrange – just take a look at the club calendar!

This season, the School and Club Youth Conferences are sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors, so the conferences have been renamed to represent a model of their vehicles.

The Granite City teams are always on the lookout for new players, so if you are interested in playing, just get in touch with us at Aberdeen Wanderers. Playing experience is not necessary.

Grampian Girls

Also following on from last season’s newest female teams – Grampian Girls Under 15s and Under 18s – Aberdeen Wanderers girls section will be working closely with other Grampian Clubs to get competitive rugby for the girls. Last season, Aberdeen Wanderers Girls, played alongside girls from Banff RFC, Deeside RFC, Ellon RFC, Garioch RFC and Huntly RFC as Grampian Girls which saw the Under 15s team get into the National Cup Semi Final and the Under 18s get through to the National Shield Semi Final – which is a fantastic achievement for all the girls that took part in these newly formed teams.

Minis and Micros

Aberdeen Wanderers Mini and Micros start their season, again on Saturday 26th August, at Groats Road from 10:00am. This day will welcome existing and new players to the club from Primary one and up, where boys and girls can learn to play rugby is a safe and controlled manner. It’s always a fun day at the club and is followed of by a BBQ and refreshments. Also, as it’s the start of the season for the senior games, why not stay and support the teams?
