Young Aberdeen Wanderers travel to Scotstoun for 2nd leg of 1872 Game

everyone enjoyed the day and there was a good bit of bonding going on

Saturday 6th May saw the Aberdeen Wanderers Primary 6 team travel to Glasgow to be the guard of honour for the Glasgow Warriors in the Pro 12 game against Edinburgh Rugby. As well cheering on the Warriors, they also played a game during half time.

Here is Graeme Buchan’s (Aberdeen Wanderers Primary 6 lead coach) account of the trip

“After a slightly delayed departure we made reasonable time on the journey down after having stopped briefly at the high point of roadside cuisine which is the Horn restaurant. We continued our journey to a sunny and breezy Scotstoun unhindered and arrived in good time at 4pm. The stadium was filling up and the boys were very excited. After meeting our guide, we assembled at the corner of the stadium and were handed out flags and waited in something that was akin to a line. The boys marched out along the main stand and waved the players onto the pitch with the other clubs from; Stirling, Highland and Ayr. The match kicked off and we made our way to the corner stand.

A little bit before half time we warmed up on training pitch whilst being watched, unbeknown to us, by the t.v. cameras. At half-time we all raced onto the pitch to face a fairly chunky Ayr side. We did very well, considering the occasion, and there was an almost tangible interest in the game from the 20,000 or so spectators with lots of shouting, defence was great and we twice managed to hold off attacks from the Ayr side tackles who crossed our line but could not ground the ball. We attacked well and managed to score a try through Lewis Mclean which was well worked for by all the team. In the latter part of the game our lack of ability to cover the field in defence (or attack) cost us, Ayr ran the ball wide and touched down in the corner to level the game. However, we were very proud of everyone and there were no injuries.

Back to our seats and time to enjoy the second half, amongst calls for …. Can I have a hot-dog/chips/anything they saw in the hands of the other teams….. Glasgow Warriors lost the game 18-29 but won the 1872 Cup as they had a better aggregate score over the two games. After the game we made our way round to the corner of the stand where the boys managed to speak to a lot of the Glasgow players including Stuart Hogg and Fin Russel, many things were signed including boots and flags. Back on the bus after the obligatory toilet preparations and we got as far as Stirling before there were calls for food and drinks. Unusually slow service in Burger King led to a long stop. Back on the bus and after two aborted attempts to teach Flower of Scotland we gave in and left them to I-phone world of giggles and sniggers. With the minibus limited to 60 mph we eventually made it back to Groats road and discharged most of the boys, then back to Westhill. Got to bed about 3am, Sunday was a quiet day.I think everyone enjoyed the day and there was a good bit of bonding going on throughout the trip which should see us well for the coming year.”

A big thank to Glasgow Warriors for inviting our team down and to Graeme and Lesley (Sinclair) for organising the trip and coaching the players during the game.

The Primary 6s are back in action this Saturday (13th May) at the Deeside rugby festival in Banchory when all the action kicks off at 10:30am.
