Grampian Girls Under 15s beat Hillhead Jordanhill in the first round of the Girls National Club Cup

it was more pleasing to see the girls from all the different clubs gel as a team
- Steven Hutcheon, Under 15 coach

The Grampian Girls Under 15 team travelled to Glasgow on Sunday 12th March to play their first-round match in this season’s Girls National Club Cup. The team was drawn against Hillhead Jordanhill Under 15s after qualifying for the competition in February where they played against teams in a round robin event from Howe of Fife and Caithness.

A damp day in Glasgow did not affect the spirits of the Grampian traveling team who sealed a victory by scoring 44 points to nil. Players of the Day for Grampain Girls were April and Aicha as voted for by out hosts Hill Jills.

Under 15 coach, Steven Hutcheon said "while it was great to win and progress in the cup, as a coach it was more pleasing to see the girls from all the different clubs gel as a team and grow in confidence in their and each others ability as the game went on. The willingness with which 5 girls volunteered to play for Hill Jills in the first half, and another 5 in the second half says a lot about the attitude in the team – the girls just want to play rugby! By doing this though it meant that all the girls that travelled got at least 40 minutes of rugby. Lastly though it was a long journey there and back hearing the signing on the way down and the way back was brilliant. All in all not a bad way to spend my birthday!"

The Grampian Girls Under 18s were drawn a BYE in the 1st round of the cup, however they took the opportunity to also travel to Glasgow to play the Hillhead Jordanhill Under 18s in a friendly game. Despite losing 65 points to nil to a very strong team, the Grampian Under 18s got some much needed competitive game time, which saw some excellent rugby being played by both teams.

After the games had finished, all players from both age groups and teams socialised in the club house over food and refreshments, which was a very friendly and fun atmosphere thanks to our hosts. It was great to see international players Jade Konkel and Heather Lockyer at the club who are both involved at the grass roots of the game – great role models for the girls.

Before heading back to the bus, the Grampian Girls were given their new hoodies, which are sponsored by Faith Simpson Charted Accountants, and a few photographs were taken.

Both Grampian teams will now progress into the quarter finals of this national competition and these games will be played on Sunday 26th March 2017. Once the draw has been made, the fixtures will be announced.
